Castle Keep Snap

The Castle Keep Snap is a tribute to the historic Snap Dragon once displayed in Norwich Castle Museum.

For centuries the Norwich Snap Dragon was carried through the streets during civic celebrations. First recorded in 1408, the great snapping creature of wicker, cloth and paint was paraded through the city by the Guild of St George, delighting crowds and occasionally stealing a hat or two.

For many years one of these historic Snap Dragons could be seen inside Norwich Castle Museum. Following the redevelopment of the Keep, the dragon was quietly removed from public display.

The Castle Keep Snap honours that missing dragon.

Antiqued in faded gold and deep red, this creature is styled after the colours and character of historic pageantry beasts. Its worn tones echo the feeling of something that has watched generations pass through the castle halls.

Long-time collectors may remember the 1 of 1 Heritage Snap, previously released as part of a charity fundraiser supporting Alzheimer’s Society. The Castle Keep Snap continues that lineage, keeping the memory of Norwich’s dragon alive.

Until the real dragon returns to the castle, this one stands watch.
