What is Known

Black Shuck is one of the few Beasts the Guild did not have to invent a language for.

East Anglia has been talking about him for centuries.

The difficulty is deciding how much of that history belongs to the creature itself, and how much belongs to us.

Reports place Shuck on roads, near churches, at gates, beside fields and anywhere a journey begins to feel slightly less ordinary. He is usually described as enormous, black, silent and impossible to mistake for a normal dog. Beyond that, accounts become less reliable. Some call him an omen. Others a guardian. Others simply something that watches.

I prefer the last interpretation.

Not every presence has to be a warning.

Sometimes something stands at the edge of the road because edges matter.

The physical Shucks kept by hunters are not the creature himself. They are representations of an older idea, made to invoke protection, boundaries and safe passage.

Which, considering how often people insist on wandering into places they have been explicitly warned about, remains useful.
